Students at Alcona Schools were given the opportunity to “play with a purpose” and join the Unified League for the Spring E-Sports season. The season is supported by Special Olympics and Play VS and features players with cognitive or developmental impairment pairing up with general education students to compete in Mario Kart. Each team of four will play against schools across Michigan and the surrounding areas for 10 weeks this season. The purpose of the league is to make E-sports more inclusive and accessible. At Alcona, the five new E-sports players competing in the Unified league are all 8th-grade girls - another underrepresented demographic in the E-sports world. In addition to practice and matches, students will also engage in Bovins Life Skills lessons with Prevention Specialist and E-Sports Coach, Les Thomas.
