Assessing Gaps in Substance Use Resources in Presque Isle County: A Path Toward Stronger Community Support

Addressing substance use challenges in rural areas requires not only resources but also a clear understanding of what’s working and where there’s room for improvement. In Presque Isle County, this understanding was made possible by the Presque Isle Substance Free Coalition through a recently conducted Community Gap Needs Assessment.

Understanding the Assessment

The primary goal of this assessment was to identify gaps in the current substance use services, from prevention to treatment and recovery support. Through comprehensive surveys, focus groups, and interviews with key stakeholders, the coalition gathered vital insights into the state of substance use services in the area. This process helped identify service gaps, barriers to care, and potential opportunities for improvements.

Key Findings: Areas of Concern

The assessment revealed several critical issues that need attention to ensure better support for individuals affected by substance use:

  1. Limited Access to Treatment

Many residents face difficulties in accessing local treatment facilities or finding available providers. This limitation exacerbates the challenge for those seeking help for substance use disorders.

  2. Transportation Barriers

For those living in rural areas, a lack of reliable transportation makes it even more difficult to access care. Long distances, poor road conditions, and limited public transportation options all create significant obstacles.

  3. Stigma and Awareness Issues

A pervasive stigma surrounding substance use prevents many individuals from seeking the help they need. There is also a general lack of awareness about available resources and how to access them.

  4. Workforce Shortages

There is a noticeable shortage of trained professionals in substance use treatment and recovery services. A lack of qualified providers makes it harder for individuals to get the support they need in a timely manner.

  5. Housing and Employment Challenges

Stable housing and job opportunities are essential for individuals in recovery. However, these remain significant barriers that prevent many from achieving long-term success in their recovery journey.

Next Steps: Developing Strategic Solutions

Building on these findings, the Presque Isle Substance Free Coalition is actively working to develop strategic initiatives aimed at addressing these gaps. The goal is to create a more comprehensive, accessible, and effective continuum of care in the community, from prevention to recovery.

Join the Effort: Community Involvement is Key

Addressing these challenges is not a task for the coalition alone—it requires the involvement of the entire community.
