The first in-person Leelanau Senior Expo since COVID was hosted by Leelanau County Senior Services on June 20 at Suttons Bay High School. Catholic Human Services - Up North Prevention engaged with 166 older community members on topics including vaping, how to talk to the young people in their lives about substance use using the Talk Sooner app, and medication safety. Senior citizens are often using multiple medications prescribed by multiple healthcare providers. Making sure that everyone is aware of the complete list of medications and periodically reassessing the need for each is important! Keeping those medications safe from falling into the wrong hands is also important, so we gave out six medication lockboxes. Deterra bags, which are used to deactivate and dispose of unused and unneeded medications in an environmentally conscious way, were also provided and were a big favorite. We also provided free doses of Narcan for community members to have on hand and made connections with several organizations that might want to have a Naloxone Rescue Kit stationed near their AED and other first aid supplies. Last but certainly not least, it’s always important to have some sweet treats to hand out! It was a great day to meet with our community.
