For the past 9 years the Live Well Kalkaska Substance Free Coalition has held its Serenity Vigil the first Monday in December, at the Kalkaska Church of Christ. The vigil is a special time to bring the community and families living with substance use disorders (SUD) together to remember those in the community they have lost to overdose, those still struggling, and celebrate those in recovery. The event provides the community with education in an effort to eliminate stigma towards SUD and bring an understanding to what SUD really is, a disease. The evening is filled with music by a local musician, a speaker in recovery or a family member, an educational piece, refreshments, community fellowship, and a candlelight walk to the serenity tree, where an ornament is placed to remember a loved one. The Serenity Tree is located in the Serenity Garden, just outside of the Rocking Horse Arena, on West Kalkaska Road, in Kalkaska.
