The Grand Traverse County Drug Free Coalition (GTCDFC) hosted a community screening of Screenagers Under The Influence: Addressing Vaping, Drugs, and Alcohol in the Digital Age. The film is the third feature documentary in the Screenagers trilogy and delves into how the tech revolution has reshaped adolescence and its effects on substance use. The film debunks myths and depicts strategies parents and schools can use to encourage healthy decision-making, support teen mental health, set limits, and create healthy home environments. The film also includes many ways young people are using their wisdom and strength to help each other and themselves through this complicated terrain around substance use.
The film was followed by a panel discussion; the panel was made up of local experts including Pam Lynch - Executive Director of Harm Reduction Michigan; Adam Newth - Team Lead at Addiction Treatment Services' Outpatient Facility and a person with lived experience who is active in the Traverse City recovery community; Dr. Sander Weckstein - a child and adolescent psychiatrist who has practiced in Northern Michigan for over 30 years; Tpr Justin Rohrback - with the Michigan State Police; Dr. Dave McGreaham - former Vice President of Medical Affairs/Chief Medical Officer at Munson Medical Center, he is currently works as the Medical Director of the Northern Michigan Opioid Response Consortium, Vice Chair of the GTCDFC, Chair of the Substance Free Coalition of Northwest Michigan, Face Addiction Now board member, and is involved in many other community groups; Mitch O'Brien - works at 217 Recovery and is the father to a teenager; Dan O'Berski - Athens Principal at Traverse City West Senior High . There was thoughtful discussion as well as some great ideas of how we can work to address this issue in our community.
