The Alcona Chapter of Students Leading Students (SLS) took a day trip to the family-owned Roscommon Zoo as a part of their monthly meeting in June. The zoo park at its heart is a petting zoo, but with many other exhibits, like large cats, primates, and birds, that are more hands-off. SLS youth were able to interact with the animals as well as with their caretakers to learn about what it takes to care for creatures large, like a 500-pound white tiger named Magic, and small, like Amelia the armadillo. The trip was supported by the Opioid Affected Youth Initiative, Up North Prevention, and Alcona Community Schools.
