At the Rural Michigan Opioid & Substance Use Summit on July 25, Suzanne Prentice received the 2024 Recovery Hero Award. The Northern Michigan Opioid Response Consortium (NMORC) developed the Recovery Hero Award to recognize advocates who build better living environments for those affected by substance use disorder (SUD) in rural Michigan.
Suzanne’s personal experience of understanding the struggles families face when a loved one has a SUD sparked a passion in her to help others in her community. Suzanne is the founder and coordinator of the Kalkaska Substance Free Coalition; the coalition has a mission to eliminate stigma and provide education, connections, and support. Suzanne also works as a Prevention Specialist with Up North Prevention, an initiative of Catholic Human Services. She believes in educating the community on the root causes of substance use to eliminate stigma and works to educate parents, and other community members, on what they can do to foster resilience to lower the risk of developing a SUD.
All of us at Up North Prevention would like to congratulate Suzanne on winning this award and we are proud of all the important work she does to help those in need in our community!
