Take Back Program Helps to Keep Communities Safe

On Saturday, April 27, during the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) Prescription Drug Take Back Day, the Kalkaska County Sheriff's office collected two pounds of unused or expired medications. Each year, twice a year, the Kalkaska Substance Free Coalition partners with the Kalkaska Sheriff’s office to promote the DEA’s program, but the Sheriff’s Office lobby is open to dispose of prescription medication 24/7. When emptying the collection box for this Take Back Day event, 25 pounds of prescription medications had been collected between the dates of April 11 through April 26. That is 25 pounds safe, off the streets, and out of the hands of youth and other community members. Undersheriff Dave Wagner says this is a great thing and believes that our community is aware of the drug take back program and utilize it to drop off medications off as soon as they need to be disposed. The next scheduled DEA Take Back Day will be in October, but don’t wait, continue to take back your unused medications as soon as possible. Be a part of keeping our youth, families, and community safe.
