  • What Is Vaping?

    • “Vaping” is the inhaling of a vapor created by an electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS).
    • ENDS include a variety of products that look like:
      • Cigarettes (E-cigarettes)
      • Pens
      • Thumb drives (Juuls– pronounced Jewel)
    • Vapes are sold in vape shops, gas stations, convenience stores and online.
  • Vaping: Myth vs Reality

           1. MythE-liquids are safe and non-addictive.

               RealityMost e-liquids contain nicotine, which can be addictive when used.  Check with the producer to see if nicotine is in their products.

          2.  MythAnyone can vape.

               RealityYou must be at least 18 years of age to purchase and use a vape device.

          3.  MythMy friends have tried it and they are ok.  It should be fine for me to use, too.

               RealityNicotine found in e-liquid can cause harm to the brain, which is still developing until about age 25.

          4.  MythVaping is safer than regular cigarettes.

               RealityE-cigarettes are considered tobacco products because most of them contain nicotine.  Scientists are still learning more about how e-cigarettes affect health (Center for Disease Control, Know the Risks).

  • How does it work?

    • A cartridge in the device is filled with a liquid (called e-juice or e-liquid) that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and chemicals. The device heats the e-liquid which forms a vapor.  The vapor is then inhaled.
  • What Are the Health Effects of Vaping?

    • Science shows that nicotine is harmful for the body, especially teens.  We don’t know how bad vaping truly is because it has not been around long enough to to know how it affects the body over time.
    • What experts do know:
      • Toxic materials are generated when you heat up the vape juice, which can include ethylene glycol (antifreeze), benzen (car exhaust), and heavy metals such as tin and zinc, and cancer-causing agents called carcinogens.

      • Vaping is very addictive.
        • Higher risk for an adolescent brain to develop nicotine and other types of addiction.
      • Weakens the immune system
      • Damage to gums and mouth.
      • Respiratory problems, shortness of breath
      • Second had vapor exposure
      • High blood pressure, irregular heart beat
      • Headaches, dizziness
      • Agitation, insomnia
  • Dangers:

    • Vaping is First Choice of teen nicotine usage and leads to 3x more likely to use regular cigarettes
    • Nicotine is the MOST TOXIC substance on earth, per drop = 2 drops = death
    • Batteries can catch fire or explode (while in pocket or in mouth!)
    • Heavy metal content in smoke from heating coils
    • Poison inhalation from e-juice, nicotine, flavorings
    • Second-hand smoke contains same hazardous particles as original vapor
    • Children mistaking e-juice for kid-products and getting poisoned
    • Adolescent brain becoming addicted faster and impairment side-effects such as:
      • attention deficit
      • addiction
      • anxiety
      • depression
